Charles Lindbergh Bridge

Bridge Rehab Project, Nassau County, Contract H63029-17G
Montauk Revetment
Scope

The project consisted of the complete removal and replacement of the concrete roadway deck for the Charles Lindbergh Boulevard Bridge, a three-span steel plate-girder bridge which carries six lanes of traffic over the Meadowbrook Parkway's mainline and service roads in East Meadow, New York. Spans range between 115 feet and 145 feet. Ancillary work included bearing replacements, steel and concrete repairs, new lighting, bridge railings and deck drainage.

The work included:
  • Traffic Staging to allow one half of the bridge to carry two-way traffic while the demolition and -reconstruction was performed on the other half.
  • Development of engineered demolition plans to allow for the safe and efficient removal of the bridge's concrete deck and overhangs.
  • Development of Structural Lifting Plans required to jack and temporarily support the bridge girders, remove the existing steel bearings and replace them with elastomeric steel-laminated bearings.
  • Miscellaneous concrete and steel repairs/painting to upgrade the steel girders, concrete piers and abutments, and asbestos abatement.
  • New reinforced HPIC concrete roadway bridge deck utilizing stay-in-place forms.
  • New bridge deck drainage system, bridge deck lighting, bridge sidewalk, steel bridge rail and pedestrian fence.

The project was completed primarily by H&L's own labor force, and required close coordination with the bridge's owner, the Nassau County Department of Public Works (NCDPW,) as well as the state DOT to plan the parkway lane closures and detours required by the project staging.

During the course of the project, a world champion Cricket Tournament was scheduled at Eisenhower Park, which is immediately adjacent to the project. Since it was critical to maintain all traffic lanes of the bridge to accommodate the crowds, the project was paused during this time and H&L worked cooperatively with the NCDPW to re-schedule the work and pick up time in any way possible to minimize disruptions.

Project completion is expected in early 2026.
