The project was completed entirely by H&L's own labor force and equipment. H&L worked closely with the US Army Corps of Engineers as well as the NYSDEC, NYS Parks, and Town of East Hampton to minimize impacts on recreation at Montauk Point. H&L's rapid collaboration eliminated the need to close the northern staging access, keeping the Montauk Point oceanfront open to the public throughout the project.
Some of the challenges that were faced in this project were the remote location of the site and the strict requirements of the size and quality of armor stone. Through an elaborate process of quality control and market research, H&L sourced a number of stone quarries that were able to provide armor stone of the correct size, quality, and quantities to meet the strict demands of the project's specifications and scheduling. Additionally, H&L worked with a number of trucking companies to facilitate transportation of such unprecedentedly large stones to the very eastern point of New York State.
H&L's crew were able to foresee issues in site conditions and act quickly to propose innovative mitigation measures which resulted in an uninterrupted progression of the work. Despite the numerous challenges that were posed in this project, H&L was able to reach substantial completion of all construction on the project 8 months ahead of schedule.
H&L was able to pursue the project diligently and safely, relinquishing the site back to the stakeholders ahead of schedule for the enjoyment of the public. H&L's efficient prosecution of the work has ensured that the Montauk Point Lighthouse will be protected from the effects of erosion for decades, and perhaps centuries to come.
